HYPHEN illuminates Asian America through hard-hitting investigative features
and provocative commentary on the cultural and political trends shaping one of
the fastest growing ethnic populations in America. Offering profiles of
change-makers and other personalities as well as interviews with up-and-coming
artists and musicians, HYPHEN holds a mirror to the enormous richness and
contradiction of a community that is re-envisioning and rewriting what it means
to be Asian American. It was founded by a group of Bay Area journalists and
community leaders who saw the need for a national Asian American magazine that
would go beyond conventional stories like the "model minority" profile and
confront overlooked and controversial topics. HYPHEN refers to the debate
surrounding so-called "hyphenated identity." Some Asian Americans resist the
idea that they are somehow not fully "American" when they are labeled
"Asian-American;" others wear the identity proudly -- while some shrug it off
as irrelevant. HYPHEN believes these differences of opinion reflect the
dynamism and complexity that define today's Asian America. It uncovers these
tensions while exploring what it is that ties everyone together. |
